Why Painting Tiny Might Be the Best Thing You Ever Do

When most people begin painting, they dream of creating large, impressive artworks to hang on the wall.

I used to think the same.

But over the last few months, I've discovered something unexpected. The smallest paintings I've ever created have had the biggest impact on my creativity, confidence and wellbeing.

Painting tiny has slowed me down.

Instead of trying to capture every detail, I've learned to notice the feeling of a place. The light through a tree. The colours reflected on water. A quiet path disappearing into the distance.

Tiny paintings encourage you to simplify.

Rather than becoming overwhelmed by a complicated scene, you begin to ask yourself one simple question:

What do I really want to remember about this moment?

That's exactly what my Tiny Visual Diary has become.

Not a sketchbook full of perfect paintings, but a collection of memories.

Some pages remind me of holidays. Others capture an ordinary morning that suddenly felt extraordinary. Together they tell a story that photographs alone never could.

The wonderful thing is that anyone can start.

You don't need expensive materials or hours of free time. A tiny sketchbook, a few colours and ten quiet minutes can be enough to create something meaningful.

As your confidence grows, you'll begin to notice beauty everywhere.

A field on the drive home.

The reflections in a puddle.

The silhouette of a single tree against the evening sky.

Those moments become invitations to paint rather than moments that slip away unnoticed.

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by blank pages or thought you weren't good enough to paint, I encourage you to try working small.

It removes the pressure to create a masterpiece and replaces it with curiosity.

One tiny painting becomes another.

Then another.

Before long, you realise you've created something far more valuable than a collection of artworks.

You've created a visual diary of your life.

And that, to me, is one of the greatest gifts painting can offer.

🌿 Collect moments. One tiny painting at a time.
