Hello, I’m Faye Saunders-Low, the artist and teacher behind Art by FSL.
My creative journey began with Kawaii-inspired digital illustration in Procreate. From there, I moved into coloured pencil and graphite, developing my observational skills and eventually creating commissioned pet portraits.
That background taught me to notice the smallest details, work patiently and use different creative tools to bring an idea to life. It also led me to watercolour—and to the tiny paintings that have become such an important part of my life and work.
I discovered that painting small made creativity feel less intimidating. A tiny page didn’t have to be perfect; it could simply hold a memory, a place or an ordinary moment I didn’t want to forget. That idea became the Tiny Visual Diary.
Today, through Art by FSL and the Tiny Studio, I bring together illustration, digital design and traditional watercolour to create connected collections, approachable projects and gentle step-by-step lessons.
Whether you’re returning to art or beginning later in life, I want you to know that creativity doesn’t have a deadline—and you don’t need to be fearless before you begin.
My Philosophy
I don’t believe painting is about perfection.
I believe it’s about paying attention—and giving yourself permission to begin.
When we sketch and paint, we start to notice things we might otherwise miss: the shape of a flower, the colours in a changing sky or the quiet beauty hidden inside an ordinary day.
That is why I teach sketch first, paint second. When we break the process into small, approachable steps, confidence begins to grow and the blank page feels a little less frightening.
Painting gives us a reason to slow down, look more closely and appreciate the world around us.
Every tiny painting becomes more than a piece of art.
It becomes a memory.
A moment.
A story.

How I Create
As a watercolour and graphite artist and illustrator, I use a variety of traditional and digital tools to bring my ideas to life.
Each project begins with my own concept, story, theme and creative direction. I use sketching, Procreate and, at times, computer-generated imagery to explore compositions, colour palettes and develop project references.
Those references then become the starting point for my traditional work. I simplify them, sketch them and bring them to life by hand in watercolour or graphite—often turning the process into lessons that others can follow and make their own.
For me, creativity has never been about using just one tool. It is about taking an idea through each stage until it becomes something meaningful that we can create, learn from and enjoy.
